The Snooze Factor

14th November may be celebrated as Children’s Day in India, but Globally it has a greater significance as being World Diabetes Day. The blue circle in the logo adopted by the UN represents global diabetes awareness. ‘It signifies the importance of unity of the community globally about diabetes in response to the diabetes epidemic’- IDF (International Diabetes Federation).

We at Sandu Pharmaceuticals want to do our bit in raising awareness on this subject.

We Indians love a hearty meal, which usually leads to your full tummies & a longing for a short nap. Did you know, these frequent short naps can really shorten the quality of life you may have? You may be wondering why we are ruining the joy of your favorite day-time activity. How in the world does it relate to our agenda of raising awareness? Well!!! We have your best interest at heart.

Diabetes can be correlated with Ayurvedic diseases like Prameha, Medoroga (metabolic disorders) & Santarpaniya  Vyadhi (disorders due to overnutrition). Prameha is one of the conditions that are seen as a result of Medoroga & Santarpaniya Vyadhi, followed by disorders such as ati-sthoulyata, cardiovascular disorders, memory and intellect defects, lethargy etc. So, when taking a look at the causes for Prameha (Diabetes) we find that Divaswap or daytime napping is listed as one of them. Thus, the common denominator between all three that we can identify is Divaswap.

Ayurveda says that in prameha, unhealthy lifestyle leads to vitiation of all the dosha & dhatus which have jala mahabhuta predominance. So, there is malfunction of kapha dosha predominantly along with pitta & vata dosha. Also we find there is malfunctioning of meda dhatu (mainly) along with other 9 body tissues. The result of this is excess urination, thirst, hunger, profuse sweating etc which are the most common symptoms in diabetic patients. Divaswap vitiates all three doshas in our body. This along with other causative factors leads to various disorders.at modern research says about the effects of frequent daytime napping is represented in the schematic.

Frequent day-time napping causes:

·      Increase in BMI

·      Waist circumference (central adiposity)

·      Increased fasting insulin

·      Increased cholesterol & cholesterol related lipoproteins

·      Fatigue & bodily pain

·      Disturbed sleep efficiency at night.

The stated factors are usually related to increased risk of cardiovascular & metabolic diseases. Just as we give a lot of thought when it comes to investments, similarly we must spare the same for our lifestyle. As what we do daily is ultimately an investment to our health for now & future. Haven’t we voluntarily chosen this habit of frequent day-time napping as part of our lifestyle? We know old habits die hard but correcting this is within our capability. So take this one small step towards your health & limit your daytime napping.

We ask you this, if prevention is better than cure, why wait?

Snooze your habit of snoozing for an improved healthy lifestyle, before it’s too late.

As the theme of World Diabetes Day for the year 2021-2023 is ‘Access to Diabetes Care’,

Sandu offers:

·      Debix

·      Vasant Kusumakar Rasa

·      Chandraprabha Gutika

We observed PCOS awareness month in September!! As per the observations of certain groups working in the field of PCOS in India, medical practitioners more often  recommend dietary and lifestyle changes as a first response to PCOS pateints, than in the United States, but the push for prescription medication is also less likely as a first response by medical professionals in India. May be because, there is less awareness of herbal options for this condition PCOS.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS in short, a condition in women, is becoming increasingly common in recent times.

The complicated  name, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, can be simplified as follows:

  • Poly- means many.
  • Cyst means a bubble-like thing in the body tissue.
  • Ovary is the female organ that produces ova or eggs.
  • Syndrome means a group of signs and symptoms complained by the patient

The basic cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR), despite large quantities of insulin in the body, target tissues  like fat resist the action of insulin. And this results in variety of signs and symptoms in PCOS.

First of all, the menstrual periods become irregular. PCOS drastically reduces fertility because the ovary fails to form ova.

In PCOS, there is a marked tendency to put on weight. The accumulated weight does not get removed easily even with a vigorous exercise programme. All in all, PCOS leads to difficulty maintaining a healthy weight.

Male hormone, Testosterone, also causes the occurence pimples and unwanted hair growth on the face. Just like teenagers and adolescents, the patient starts getting acne which does not go away easily, causing a great deal of stress for her.

How to correct all this topsy turvy? Well, it is not easy. It needs drastic life-style changes like fasting and doing physical exercise. These lifestyle measures decrease insulin resistance. Eating a balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables which will provide you with what are called anti-oxidants. Tobacco and alcohol aggravate the hormonal imbalance so they must be avoided at all costs.

Bifidobacteria And Breastfeeding Benefits Connection

Our Ancient Ayurvedic books are the richest source of health wisdom; our seers always maintained that this wisdom will remain valid eternally, it does’nt have the expiry date. This is so true for: मातुरेव पिबेत्स्तन्यं तत्परं देहवृद्धये। This simple Sanskrit line means that mother’s milk is the best for infant’s growth and development and therefore, breastfeeding should be promoted. It is as simple as that because it is the MOTHER NATURE’S gift.

AND NOW WE HAVE THE MODERN PROOF FOR THIS ANCIENT FACT. IT SO HAPPENED THAT THE SCIENTISTS NOTICED REMARKABLY HIGH LEVELS OF A CERTAIN MOLECULE IN INFANT STOOL SAMPLES. THIS PARTICULAR MOLECULE COULD BE THE KEY IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW GUT MICROBES HELP STRENGTHENING BREASTFED CHILDREN'S IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Besides, nutrients like water, carbohydrates, protiens, fats, vitamins and minerals, mother’s milk contains certain bioactives and commensal bacteria as shown in the figure. It seems that, the gut of breasfed babies do have certain microbes which contribute to the beneficial effects of mother’s milk.

THE LATEST RESEARCH REVEALS HOW GUT MICROBES MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF BREASTFEEDING. WE KNEW  THAT BREASTFED INFANT’S GUT HARBOURS CERTAIN GUT BACTERIA WHICH ARE KNOWN AS BIFIDOBACTERIA. HOW DO THESE BACTERIA ARE BENEFICIAL, THAT WE KNOW NOW. A NEW STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT THE BIFIDOBACTERIA, WHICH UTILIZE COMPONENTS OF BREASTMILK TO GROW IN THE GUT OF INFANTS, CONTAIN A PARTICULAR ENZYME. THIS ENZYME ENABLES THE BACTERIA TO PRODUCE SMALL MOLECULES THAT ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE A BENEFICIAL EFFECT ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. THIS RESEARCH HAS BEEN PUBLISHED IN NATURE MICROBIOLOGY.

The studied bifidobacteria utilize certain carbohydrates (human milk oligosaccharides, HMOs) in breastmilk to grow in the gut where they transform aromatic amino acids (Proteins, which are also found in breastmilk) into aromatic lactic acids. The production of these aromatic lactic acids in the gut probably has a beneficial effect on the infants' immune system.

Bifidobacteria do play a main role during this time to digest the healthy sugars in breast milk that are important for babies’ growth. In fact, breastfedd babies do have much higher levels of these beneficial bacteria in their intestines than those who are bottle-fed. Bifidobacteria control the immune system and keep the gut wall healthy in infants, which can help prevent infections.

Besides the health effects in infants, as a bonus, mother gets following benefits of breastfeeding!

l  Breastfeeding helps mother to lose body weight after delivery.

l  It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps  uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth.

l  Breastfeeding also lowers risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

l  It may lower risk of osteoporosis, too.

l  It is indeed a bliss to enjoy the company of the baby. Bonding does happen.

l  And on a lighter note, breastfeeding helps you save time and money, no need to buy formula milk, bottles etc.

So MOTHER NATURE does teach us to live symbiotically with the MICROBIOME, right from the birth!!

Relieve stress with the right herbs

COVID APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR

Keeping up with this fast-paced world can leave a lot of individuals stressed and anxious. Young or old, everyone seems to be constantly racing to reach new heights, achieve more and do everything at once. While some of this drive is great to push one to succeed, too much of it can leave one extremely anxious.

Here, it is important to note that stress in short bursts is actually good for the body. Our ancestors used this body response to ward off danger and stay alive. A little bit of anxiety before an important meeting or exam can help keep you sharp and alert, allowing you to do your best.

However, when stress and anxiety become chronic, as we are going through this phase of PANDEMIC LOCKDOWNS and all other related stresses, the harmful effects set-in. This not only affects your physical health, but your emotional and psychological health too. The Arjuna was under tremendous stress when he faced his near n dears during Mahabharata war. Stress affected his decision making ability negatively. Ayurveda also categorically states that “विषादो रोगवर्धनानां (अग्र्यः)”, the depression is the  leader of disease aggravators. And that is very true as:

Negative consequences of chronic stress and anxiety include:

  • Muscle pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Acid reflux
  • Gastrointestinal concerns, IBS etc
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Acne and skin ailments
  • Hair loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Chest pains
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Problems with memory and attention
  • Weakened immune system

The last one, weakened immune system, is very bad consequence of  chronic stress and anxiety. It does increase the susceptibility to disease conditions; severity of the disease is more and recovery is slow or in unfortunate situations patients may succumb to the fatal disease. Consuming anti-anxiety and stress related medicines is not the solution. Because these medicines are often loaded with toxic chemicals that can seriously harm the individual in the long run. Further, initially these medicines may offer short-term relief, but over time they can become habitual and a dependent crutch for a lot of individuals.

Be sans stress with herbs

Instead, one can find the answers for these stressful times in nature itself. Several herbs have been used since ancient times to calm the body and combat stress without any chemicals or side-effects. In addition, these herbs help relax the nerves internally thus reducing stress and anxiety naturally.

Some of the best herbs to combat stress and anxiety are:

Brahmi: An herb with multiple benefits, Brahmi  is a potent nerve tonic that supports healthy nerves for optimum functioning. It boosts relaxation in the mind and promotes healthy brain cells to avoid degeneration due to stress. It also helps strengthen memory, concentration and other cognitive functions while promoting emotional health.

Jyotishmati: Used since ancient times, this powerful herb works wonders to fight stress and its negative effects. A nerve stimulant and anti-depressant, this herb is widely used to treat stress and anxiety concerns. In addition, it also helps alleviate tension headaches, muscle pain, cognitive degeneration and gastrointestinal concerns that are often the consequences of a highly stressed life.

Shankhapushpi: Cognitive degeneration and an unhealthy mental state can also be caused due to poor circulation in the body. Shankhapushpi combats this by promoting healthy circulation of blood and oxygen to the brain, boosting memory and concentration and supporting the nervous system. In addition, this herb also promotes healthy sleep which is essential to fight anxiety and stress.

These herbs, while beneficial, are not always easy to obtain. In addition, consuming them in the right ratio is critical for maximum effectiveness without overloading the body. SANDU’s STRESAN takes care of all these concerns by combining these processed herbs with complementary elements for the perfectly balanced herbal supplement for good mental and emotional health. This natural supplement helps alleviate stress and anxiety while combating its consequences naturally and without harmful side-effects.

Tips for a stress-free life

Meditate: Take a few minutes out of your daily life to sit and meditate. Focus on your breathing or put on some soothing sounds or chants to help relax your mind and keep your stress at bay.

Reduce alcohol and sugar: Binging on sugar or alcohol may seem attractive when you are stressed but can actually worsen your health. Instead, snack on seasonal fruits and switch to herbal teas.

Stress-free state is responsible for strong immune system. One remains disease free and is able to resist the microbes attacking our body.

Staying without any stress is the COVID APPROPRIATE behaviour.

Be On Guard: Protect The Foundation Of Healthy Adulthood.

BE ON GUARD: PROTECT THE FOUNDATION OF HEALTHY ADULTHOOD.

Life begins with a big bang which is the formation of a zygote, fertilized egg cell; male sperm successfully impregnating the female ovum results in the beginning of the LIFE, beginning of the pregnancy.

Another name for life is METABOLISM. As is well known, the bye-product of metabolism is generation of reactive oxygen species, (ROS), oxidative free radicals, which are highly reactive chemicals formed from O2. Our body neutralizes these oxidative free radicals by certain bioconstituents which are famously known as “antioxidants”. Body has to to keep the check on ROS which is very essential for survival and for healthy life, because production of excessive free radicals damages proteins, fatty acids and other basic structural elements of our cells, and results in organ dysfunction and diseases.

Even during pregnancy, this delicate balance between free radical generation and removal by antioxidants is critical for the growth and development of the fetus in the uterus. It is a proven fact that in early foetal life, oxidative stress changes intrauterine development which is responsible for increased risk of chronic diseases, like heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and chronic kidney diseases, during adult life. This is called as the Barker hypothesis, also known as "small baby syndrome"!

FIGURE: Role of Antioxidants in Health and Disease

Undernutrition, malnutrition, unhealthy lifestyle behaviours and exposure to multiple human-made pollutants, during the intrauterine life, negatively affect intrauterine development and contributes to fetal origin of disease in adulthood partly due to oxidative stress.

This worrisome phase during pregnancy needs urgent attention. And therefore, antioxidants in medicinal plants are widely recommended for health promotion and disease prevention during pregnancy.

The successful outcome of pregnancy is the birth of a healthy offspring who grows into an adult with long-term scintillating health. And so for this outcome to happen, we must begin at the beginning.

SANDU’s PREG-UTERO contains the antioxidant herbs like Amalaki, Bibhitaki, Yashtimadhu, Guduchi, Ashwagandha, Bala and Brahmi etc.
